Biography:

Both "A Point of Law" and the revised version of that story Faulkner wrote for Go Down, Moses include a "deputy marshal" who sits inside the courthouse chewing a toothpick (221, 70). The novel version identifies him as an "oldish white man" whom Lucas knows from another context (70). In both texts the Judge calls him "Henry" (222, 72). Elsewhere in the Yoknapatawpha fictions the marshals are distinguished from the sheriffs and their deputies as the officers specifically assigned to the town rather than the county, but in this story the title 'marshal' seems equivalent to the more familiar one of 'bailiff' - the officer of the law assigned to a courthouse.
