Summary:

Once Ratliff arrives on the Jefferson highroad, he slows his team and looks for the Varner surrey. At the crest of the hill, he stops and waits under the shade of a tree. When the surrey arrives on its way to Frenchman's Bend, he greets Will and the two ladies and asks Flem to drive with him the two miles back to Frenchman's Bend. The Varners drive off, and Flem gets on the buckboard beside Ratliff, and the two men begin to negotiate for the Old Frenchman's Place, but Flem is firm in his price.
