Summary:

Ratliff believes that he understands all the connections regarding the buried treasure at the Old Frenchman's Place. He imagines the previous night, Eustace and Lump spying on them and then galloping away. He believes that Lump was attempting to hide that Flem is in Jefferson and sent Eustace home so he will not reveal anything of what he knows. He then anticipates that he will become involved in a bidding war for the Old Frenchman's Place with Lump. As Ratliff leaves, Freeman invites him for dinner, but Ratliff make an excuse.
