Summary:

Ratliff attempts to convince Bookwright that the figure shovelling dirt in the garden is Flem Snopes. Henry Armstid declares that Flem has found the treasure, and both Ratliff and Bookwright need to restrain him lest they be discovered. Ratliff then assures Armstid that Flem has not yet made the discovery, and the three men continue to lie in the cover of darkness for a chance to ascertain the identity of the shadowy figure. When at last "the figure [comes] in complete relief against the sky," the dispute concerning his identity comes to an end, and the three men discuss their plans for how best to uncover the treasure without being discovered by Flem (377).
