Summary: 

Mink is on his way to Varner's house to see his wife who staying there in order to get money from her. She tells him to stay away from the house and to "Stay in the woods" (266). Once, she turns her back on him, his cousin, Lump, appears behind him. The scheming Lump wants to buy Houston's wallet "sight unseen" (267) for twenty-five dollars.
