Summary:
At the camp, Mink goes to work as an axeman among the convicts. He gradually learns more about the foreman's daughter whom he saw the first night and, on the second evening, turns to find her looking at him "intently and boldly"(262). He gradually discovers her role as the camp prostitute, observing how her father periodically calls out the name of a convict who then visits her in the private room of the family house. He continues to work and to await jealously his summons.
