Summary:
Lump returns the shotgun to Mink who protests again that he is not the owner. Lump then explains further his tactic to scapegoat and lynch the Negro who found the shotgun. He also warns Mink that his wife is unwittingly incriminating him and inquires why he has not left the county yet, finding out that Mink has no funds and reprimanding him for not taking the fifty dollars Houston was carrying with him.
