Summary: 

At dawn, the farmer finally witnesses Ike Snopes stealing feed. Because he wants a reward for Houston's cow, the farmer does not yet apprehend Ike. Fearfully of betraying himself and making his dog bark, he watches Ike leave and then kicks his dog.
