Grenier Plantation|Old Frenchman Place in Requiem for a Nun (Location)

The cotton plantation created in the southeastern part of the county by Louis Grenier (better known in Yoknapatawpha lore as 'the Old Frenchman') is the county's "first big land patent" (6). It is described as so "vast" that half of it is "not even in Yoknapatawpha County" (8), and "Frenchman's Bend" is its name: "Frenchman's Bend (his plantation: his manor, his kitchens and stables and kennels and slave quarters and gardens and promenades and fields" - though as the narrator goes on to say, "a hundred years later [it] will have vanished" (27). This isn't quite true, however. It is just about exactly one hundred years later that Grenier's decaying manor house is the "old moonshiner's house" where "the murder happened" and where Temple is "kidnapped and carried to Memphis" (101). ('Frenchman's Bend,' of course, will remain - as the name of the whole region.)
