Summary:
When Fonsiba is seventeen, a Negro "from the North" comes to the commissary formally to notify Cass Edmonds that he intends to marry her and take her to his farm in Arkansas (261). Cass is angered by the man's attitude and tells him to "be off this place by full dark"; Ike is amazed that Fonsiba "ever kn[e]w him" (262).
