The narrative describes how, after Buck and Buddy increased the legacy Old Carothers left Tomey's Turl to $1000 for each of his and Tennie's surviving children, the oldest of these, James, also known as Tennie's Jim, disappeared on his 21st birthday without claiming the money. Ike traced him as far as Tennessee, hoping to get him the money, but then lost his trail - an event Ike himself records in the ledger.
