CUT: A summary passage in which Ike describes the $1000 bequest that Old Carothers left Tomey's Turl and his own anguished speculations on why his grandfather would have left that sum "to the son of an unmarried slave girl" and what it says about his character (256). This line of thought leads him back to the truth about his grandfather's relationships with Tomey, and the conviction that Tomey's Turl was Old Carothers' son. The line of thought breaks off abruptly at the thought of Old Carothers' relationship with Tomey's mother Eunice.

Summary:

Ike recalls his grandfather's will.
