Biography:

Gavin Stevens is one of Faulkner's favorite characters, and is elsewhere described as a Harvard graduate with a Ph.D. from Heidelberg who chooses to stay close to home, serving as the County Attorney for Yoknapatawpha in many of Faulkner's texts. In "The Tall Men" he is mentioned when the McCallums consult him for legal advice about the new federal cotton subsidy.

Note:
I listed the volume Knight's Gambit rather than each story. Frequently, Faulkner has Stevens voice opinions quite similar to those that fill his own speeches and public letters, and Stevens similarly stands out like an intellectual sore thumb amongst small town folk who, although they like him, fail to understand him completely. Stevens is one of Faulkner's most frequently used characters, appearing in six novels and numerous short stories.
