Biography:
Although he was not a planter before the Civil War but a lawyer, Reverend Hightower's grandfather and namesake owned slaves. He was a "thorn in his [abolitionist] son's side" but fascinated his grandson, who took pride as a boy in his grandfather's military exploits during the Civil War (470). Alive he was a "hale, bluff, rednosed man with the moustache of a brigand chief" (471). After he is killed during a cavalry raid in Jefferson, he becomes the "ghost" that haunts Reverend Hightower throughout his life (474) - although his grandson was born "about thirty years" after his death (62).
