Photo Gallery: Lauderdale County and New Carthage

According to its caption, the first photograph below was taken by Dorothea Lange in "New Carthage," but since there is no "New" Carthage in Mississippi, that is presumably an outsider's misnomer and the correct location is just "Carthage." Carthage, the seat of Leake County, is 65 miles west of Meridian, the seat of Lauderdale County, where the second photo was taken. Like the remaining 3 photos, this photo is the work of Arthur Rothstein, who like Lange was working for the Farm Security Administration. All 4 Rothstein photos were shot in 1935, so even though the last 3 only cite "Mississippi" as the place where they were taken, we assume he took them all in or near Lauderdale County.
