Biography: 

Captain Bean's military rank may indicate that, like many other flyers in Faulkner's fictions, he is an ex-World War I aviator, but that is conjecture. The narrator simply identifies him as "Captain Bean at the airport" in Memphis (241), a man who refuses to teach Willy how to fly without a certificate from a doctor but who, apparently, is willing to teach Secretary, Willy's black driver - which seems to flaunt the rules of segregation.
