Description:

According to Ratliff in The Hamlet, after Ab Snopes was whipped - and perhaps worse - by Bayard Sartoris, Uncle Buck McCaslin and "a nigger," he "skulked" around for a time in "the hills" (32). In Yoknapatawpha, the "hills" are usually the area east of Jefferson. This episode in Ab's life is depicted in "Vendee" and The Unvanquished, where the person who actually 'whips' Ab is the Negro named Ringo. Like many other Southern men of his class and time - in and out of Faulkner's fiction - Ratliff uses that racist epithet casually, but readers of the Unvanquished stories may wonder why Faulkner chooses to treat Ringo so dismissively here.
