Summary:
At the Cloche-Clos, the French who have gathered to celebrate the end of the War are "outraged" by the man whom Monaghan brought with them: as the others suddenly notice, he is a German aviator whom Monaghan shot down earlier that day (412). Soon after the narrator remarks that Monaghan has yet another "companion": an "American military policeman" (412). Sitting in the midst of "outraged France," the German and the subadar talk about music and the party of aviators speak to each other "in foreign tongues out of our inescapable isolations" (413).
