Description:

The city of Nashville was originally founded in 1779. It is three hundred miles away from the settlement that becomes Jefferson, and reached by traveling the Natchez Trace. In this story, set in the early 19th century, it seems that Nashville was the point of contact between the settlers and the larger world, including the federal government which pays "a special horseman" to carry the mail "every two weeks" from the "post office in Nashville" (8) and which might have frowned on the loss of the lock of the "Nashville mail-pouch" (6).
