Biography:

Known as “V.K. Suratt,” or simply “Suratt,” in some of Faulkner’s early fiction, he becomes "V.K. Ratliff" for the Snopes trilogy, but he plays only a small role in "Centaur in Brass." A traveling sewing-machine salesman, he is the only person in town who has had firsthand financial experience with Flem Snopes. Suratt is a shrewd businessman; but he openly admits that Flem "outsmarted" him in the deal, and he now speaks of Flem "in a tone of savage and sardonic and ungrudging admiration" (150) while sounding the warning as to the kind of danger Flem can pose.
