Description:

Wesley Pritchel and the Flints live near a "little cross-roads hamlet" (114) that is about "twenty-odd miles" from Jefferson (113). Except for the distance from town, the story gives no indication of where in Yoknapatawpha this "hamlet" can be found, so in the absence of better evidence we are assuming this hamlet is Frenchman's Bend, The Hamlet in the novel of that name and a place to which Faulkner's imagination repeatedly returned. And on that basis, we assume the most likely setting for Joel Flint's "derogations" of the "local southern custom" of drinking toddies is the cross-roads store at the center of the Bend (114): that porch is a frequent gathering place for the men in the Bend.
