Biography:

During his fifteen years on the road, Joe "beds" many prostitutes. In what the narrative calls "the (comparatively speaking) south," when he doesn't have money to pay for the sex, he tells them afterward that he is "a negro" and only risks a cursing from "the woman and the matron of the house" (224). This icon also represents the "other women, women bought for a price" whom he beds in Memphis during the last phase of his relationship with Joanna.
