Biography:

The novel notes people on the streets of town several times. Jason notes "about a dozen people looking" at his niece and him while they fight on the way to school (188), for example. When Luster drives the surrey to town, they pass "pedestrians" including "a group of half grown negroes," who ask Luster where he is going, and "another group of negroes" at the Confederate soldier monument (319).
