Biography:

In the 1940 Harpers Magazine version of "The Old People," The Unnamed Child of Sam Fathers' Grandmother can either be understood as the boy to be Sam Fathers himself (based on his name) or Sam Fathers' father (based on him being a child 100 years ago, and the fact that Faulkner names the slave woman as Sam's grandmother). Faulkner clears up this confusion in the Go Down, Moses version of "The Old People" which was published in 1942. In this version of the story, the slave woman that Ikkemotubbe brings with him from New Orleans is identified only as Sam Fathers' mother and not his grandmother.
