Summary:

Charles frames "this" - i.e., the story that will be told in Chapter 16 - by acknowledging two of the sources for his narrative - Ratliff and Gavin (241). He does not mention Old Het, but much of the chapter is attributed to her (presumably as told by her to Ratliff, but this isn't always made explicit). Later in the chapter he will note that he himself was out of town during the events he is narrating (254).
