Ruby sees in the newspaper that Goodwin's regiment is coming home; she goes to meet the ship but he isn't on it. No one will tell her what has happened to Goodwin so she lets a drunk soldier pick her up who tells her about the murder Goodwin committed in the Philippines. She keeps looking for him until she finds out he is in Leavenworth Prison. She gets a second job to save enough money to buy a ticket to travel there.

Summary: 

Ruby tells Horace about how she lived and worked in San Francisco while Goodwin served in the Philippines. When his outfit returned, she had no idea he had been arrested for killing another soldier over a Philippine woman.
