Reverend Hightower (with Lena Grove and Joe Christmas) is at one of the three principal plot centers of the novel. Hightower, a Presbyterian minister, neglects and loses his wife, his church, and his profession because of his continuing obsession over his grandfather, who died in ambiguous circumstances in the Civil War. For years a pariah within the Jefferson community, Reverend Hightower is befriended by Byron Bunch, who respects him and seeks his help and guidance. The narrative describes him as a "fifty-year-old outcast" (49), "tall, with thin . . . legs and spare, gaunt arms" but also a "flabby and obese stomach" (308).
