Description:

"Three miles down" (i.e. downstream) from the spot where Old Ben swims across the river is "a log drift" on which some of the hunters cross over on foot to try to join the chase after Old Ben (194). It seems that a "log drift" is a kind of natural bridge across the river; it might be either a place in the river where a number of fallen trees have gotten stuck, or a place where timber that has been cut by loggers is collected before being floated down river to a sawmill.
