Description:

Two places in Kansas are mentioned in the novel. Ratliff refers to the federal prison at Leavenworth as a place Montgomery Ward Snopes could have ended up after his misbehavior in France during World War I. And it is from Kansas City that Wall Snopes' butcher orders "special meat" for Mrs. Widrington's Pekingese (380). (From 1871 till the great flood in 1851, Kansas City was well known for its stockyards, and thus for its beef, in particular the Kansas City strip steak.)
