Description:

Jefferson's water tower is the highest structure in the town, and so a landmark that Ab Snopes can see from "two miles" out of town (169). It is a public structure that serves the whole town, but in The Mansion the "water tank" is referred to as Flem's (223) and as one of Flem's "three monuments in Jefferson" (225). These facetious attributions refer to the story that Faulkner tells in "Centaur in Brass" and again in The Town, the previous volume in the Snopes trilogy, and concerns Flem's attempt to embezzle brass fittings from the town power plant. That event is mentioned in this novel, but the role the water tower plays in it is not mentioned.
