Description:

The "soda fountain" is mentioned only as one of the places in town which the "young fellows" can watch "the young girls" going to in "the late afternoon," presumably after school lets out (141). A "soda fountain" serves ice cream and carbonated drinks; typically it consists of a long counter, with perhaps a few tables and chairs. During Faulkner's lifetime, and in a number of his fictions, "soda fountains" are found in drugstores.
