Summary:

The men and women involved in the two legal actions agree on and arrange a change in venue. The only litigant who refuses to participate is Flem Snopes who will not even accept the summons from the Bailiff when he comes to serve the paper. Ratliff later comments how I.O. Snopes -- serving as the family's lawyer -- would have been able to engage in a grand defense "full of mottoes" if Flem's case had been able to proceed (355).
