Biography:

The woman whom Bayard calls "Granny," Rosa Millard, is a major character in the first four Unvanquished stories. Colonel John Sartoris' mother-in-law and Louisa Hawk's sister, she is killed by an outlaw named Grumby just before Christmas, 1864, and so only remembered in this story. But the exalted place she continues to occupy in Bayard's mind, and so in the story's narrative, is indicated by the fact that no matter who else sits down in it, he continues to refer to the family's "only [surviving] chair" as "Granny's chair" (63, 69).
