Summary:

This is the first of 5 events from the Civil War that Cass Edmonds cites to try to convince his cousin Ike that the South and its cause were deserted, unjustly, by God or fate. It describes an unnamed battle in which Turner Ashby leads "a handful of troops he never saw before" against an "entrenched position of backwoods-trained riflemen" (272). Given the other stories Cass tells, he may be referring to the Battle of Good's Farm, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where Ashby was killed on 6 June 1862, but if so, Cass' details are inaccurate.
