Summary:

A chronologically complex passage that is framed by Ike reading the ledgers in 1883 and finding Buck's entries for "Tomisina called Tomy" and "Turl Son of Thucydus @ Eunice Tomy" (255). The second entry ends "Fathers will," which refers not only to the legacy that Buck's father, Old Carothers, left Tomy's Turl, but also (cryptically) to the fact that both Tomy and Turl are the illegitimate children of Old Carothers - this particular "father," at least, "will" commit acts which Ike will see as a curse he must expiate. Included inside the passage is a reference to Ike's cousin, and the ledgers he keeps for the McCaslin-Edmonds plantation in the post-Civil War period.
