Biography:

General Compson’s first name is not given in the story, but he appears in quite a few other Yoknapatawpha texts, and several of them, including the “Appendix” to The Sound and the Fury that Faulkner published in 1946, identify his full name as “Jason Lycurgus Compson.” In this shortened magazine version of “The Bear,” we are told that he was “old enough to be a brigade commander in 1865” (286) and he retains this characterization ("old") throughout. In the story, set at least seventeen years later, he is a close friend and hunting companion of Major de Spain as well as the boy’s father.

Note:
JBP: Changed First Mention from Fishing Camp to Unnamed Boy's Father's Plantation (first referred to in event 282.2). Also changed "Sort name" to Compson, General.
