Description:

The story does not say where Colonel Devries commands a unit of "Negro troops" during World War II (339). But given the reluctance of the Marine Corps, which handled most of the fighting in the Pacific theater, to use black troops in combat, it is more likely that Faulkner has the European theater in mind.
