Description:

As the hunters cross "the line as sharp as the demarcation of a doored wall" (206) that separates the big woods from the rest of Yoknapatawpha, they see "skeletoned cotton- and corn fields . . . hard, gaunt, and motionless beneath the gray rain" (207). Beyond these fields, the hunters travel past a farmhouse and barns "where the hand of man had clawed for an instant, holding, the wall of the wilderness" (206). As such the farm marks the boundary between civilization and the primeval wilderness.
