Throughout the story Emily is visited by various delegations from the town's administrative class. There are two groups of Aldermen who visit her. This group, in 1896, drops by because the smell around her house from Homer Barron's rotting corpse has become a public nuisance. The four men, "three graybeards and one younger man" (122), sneak onto her property and sprinkle lime into the cellar and all the outbuildings.
